Buy tabi boots first if you live in jeans and trousers and your winters are cold. Buy tabi flats first if you wear skirts, want the split toe on show, and need a pair for three seasons. The boot is the original shape and the easier one to wear. The flat shows off the split toe more, and it is harder to style well.
At Maison Margiela, which created the tabi in 1988, the choice is expensive: the classic leather tabi ankle boot is about $1,490 in the US and the tabi ballerina starts around $1,050. Steve Madden's versions bring that down to roughly $170 to $200 for boots and $100 to $120 for flats. Most "worth it" reviews compare only Margiela prices and date from years ago. This guide puts the two shapes side by side, then covers sizing, socks and care, with vegan pairs from $48.

Isolde Tabi Ankle Boots
The classic tabi boot proportion: ankle shaft, cylindrical block heel and a side zip.
What is the difference between tabi boots and tabi flats?
Both have a toe divided between the big toe and the second toe. The boot came first: Margiela's debut tabi was an ankle boot on a round heel, and that shape is still the one most people picture. The flat came much later as a ballet-style version, cut low at the sides with no shaft. In practice, the boot uses the split toe as one feature of a bold shoe. On the flat, the split toe is almost the only design detail, so people notice it far more.
Which is easier to style?
The boot, by some distance. A tabi boot sits under wide trousers like any black ankle boot, and only the toe shows as you walk. That makes it a soft entry point if you are not sure you want people asking about your feet. The flat puts the whole shape in view, so the rest of the outfit has to leave room for it: cropped hems, bare ankles or a sock that frames the split.

Which is more comfortable?
For long walking days, most people find a tabi boot more comfortable. The shaft holds the heel in place, so your toes do not grip to keep the shoe on, and a block heel takes some pressure off the ball of the foot. Tabi flats are lighter and cooler, but a slip-on flat can move at the heel. Choosing a flat with a strap or laces fixes most of that.

Elodie Lace-Up Tabi Flats
Cord laces across the vamp let you tighten the fit, so the heel stays put.
If you are new to the split, expect a few days of getting used to it either way. Our guide to breaking in tabi shoes covers what helps.
Which is better value?
Think in cost per wear. A tabi boot gets heavy use for five or six months, then stays in the closet. A flat can come out in March and stay in rotation until November if you add socks. At Margiela prices, the flat usually wins on cost per wear because it gets more wearing days. At our prices, the gap is small enough that the practical question is which shape your current closet is missing.
Sizing: boots vs flats
| Tabi boots | Tabi flats | |
|---|---|---|
| Our size range | EU 35 to 40 (Daria to 41) | EU 35 to 40 |
| Between sizes | Size up, to leave room for a sock | Size down in slip-ons, up in patent |
| What to check | Length of your second toe and the width of your instep | Heel slip, and where the split falls |
The split should sit exactly between your big toe and your second toe. If your second toe is longer than your big toe, size up in both shapes. The full method is in our tabi sizing guide.
What socks go with each?
Any split-toe sock works in a boot, and a ribbed crew sock that shows above the shaft is part of the look. In flats, the sock either disappears or becomes the point: a no-show split-toe sock for bare-looking ankles, or a sheer or lace one you want seen. A regular sock bunches at the split, so skip it in both.

Ribbed Crew Tabi Socks
A ribbed split-toe crew sock that sits cleanly in both boots and flats.
Caring for each
- Smooth vegan leather boots and flats: wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap, dry away from heat.
- Vegan suede (Sena): dry brush only, plus a water-repellent spray before the first rain.
- Patent (Echo): a soft cloth for fingerprints, a little water for scuffs.
- Both: push tissue into the split so the two toe sections keep their shape in storage.
Maison Margiela, Steve Madden and us
Maison Margiela is the original and still the reference. The leather is excellent, the heel shape on the boot is exact, and the resale market is strong, which helps the cost per wear. Steve Madden made the split toe widely available at a mid price, in real leather, and now sells split-toe socks alongside the shoes. Its tabi flats are a solid choice if you want leather for around $100 and a wide US fit.
We make both shapes in vegan materials, at $48 to $68.99 for flats and $82.99 to $88.99 for boots, on a rounded toe box. We also make versions neither brand offers, such as a fold-over tabi boot with a slouchy shaft and a studded tabi flat.

Thea Fold Over Tabi Boots
A wide black shaft that stands up or folds down, on a stacked block heel.
Frequently asked questions
Should my first tabi be boots or flats?
Boots if you mostly wear trousers and want an easy start. Flats if you wear skirts and want the split toe to be the focus of your outfit.
Are tabi boots more comfortable than tabi flats?
For walking, usually yes, because the shaft holds your heel in place. Flats are lighter and cooler, and a strap or laces help them stay on.
Do tabi boots and flats fit the same?
They use the same EU sizes, but if you are between sizes, go up in boots to leave room for socks. In slip-on flats, go down.
Can you wear tabi flats in winter?
Yes, with opaque tights or a knee-high split-toe sock and a long coat. They are less practical than boots in rain or snow.
Do you need special socks for tabi boots?
You need split-toe socks for both shapes. A regular sock bunches at the divide and pushes the toes apart unevenly.
Why are Margiela tabi boots so expensive?
They are made in leather on a complex split-toe last, and the design is the house's best-known product. Much of the price is the name and the original design.
