Not every boot in the wardrobe needs a split toe, and the hem and sock rules above are the same for our square-toe and knee-high boots. Common mistakes
- Hiding the toe. If the hem covers the split, you are wearing an expensive black boot.
- Skipping the sock. A bare gap between hem and boot looks unfinished; a regular sock lumps in the toe.
- Doubling up. Tabi boot plus platform bag plus giant earring. Pick one.
- Anything folkloric. The tabi's Japanese origin is real, but pairing it with wrap tops or wide sashes makes it read as a reference rather than a shoe.
Sizing and fit for tabi boots
Fit boots with the sock you will wear. A mid-calf split-toe sock adds about half a size of volume, so if you are between sizes, go up. Isolde has a rounded, cylindrical toe with room for a wide forefoot; Daria's shaft suits slim calves and tucked trousers.
