Buy slingback flats first if you will wear them more than twice a week, walk a lot or dress mostly in trousers and jeans. Buy a low or mid slingback heel first if you want one shoe for work, dinners and events. The higher the heel, the more the foot slides forward, and the more the back strap has to work to stay up.
The slingback became famous through Chanel's two-tone pump, which now lists for over $1,000 in the US (October 2026), and minimal labels such as Toteme sell theirs for several hundred more than a typical high-street pair. Pages ranking for this question tend to define the slingback, list products, or compare slingbacks with ballet flats. None puts flat, kitten, mid, sandal and platform side by side. This one does.

Are slingback flats comfortable?
Usually, yes. A flat keeps your weight over the whole foot, so the strap only has to stop the heel lifting, not hold back a foot that is sliding forward. The comfort risk is the strap edge. If it is thin and stiff, it can rub the back of the heel for the first few wears. Look for an elastic section or an adjustable buckle so you can set the tension.

Claudia tabi slingback flats - Black
$64.99 black patent tabi flat with a slingback strap and silver hardware.
The split toe stops the foot moving sideways, which helps the strap stay where it should.
Which heel height is easiest in a slingback?
A kitten or low block heel is the sweet spot. You get the polish of a heel, but the foot stays mostly level, so the strap holds without digging in. Once the heel gets higher, the foot tips forward, the back of the heel lifts out of the shoe, and the strap starts to slip down. That is why most people who say slingbacks fall off are wearing a higher heel.

Vera Buckle Slingback Sandals
$58.00 square-toe slingback with a low sculptural lift and an adjustable buckle strap.
The buckle lets you tighten the strap, and the low lift keeps the foot steady.

Margot Mary Jane Slingback Pumps
$78.00 square-toe pump with an elastic mary jane strap and a sculptural cut-out heel.
A mary jane strap across the instep does half the holding, so the back strap has less to do.
When are slingback heels the better buy?
If your one pair of nice shoes has to cover office days, dinners and a wedding, a mid-height slingback heel is the more versatile choice. It works with tailored trousers, midi skirts and slip dresses, and it looks finished with tights in winter.

Mirelle Black Slingback Heels
$72.99 square toe, deep V vamp and a silver hourglass mid heel.
The metallic heel makes a plain black outfit look intentional without extra jewelry.

Claudia Tabi Slingback Heels
$78.99 tabi slingback on a heel, sizes EU 35 to 43.
The same split-toe idea as the Claudia flat, dressed up. The size range is wider than most of our heels.

Daria Black Tabi Slingback Heels
$68.99 black tabi slingback with a slim strap and an elevated heel.
What about slingback sandals and platform clogs?
An open-toe slingback sandal is lighter and easier in summer, but it suits occasions more than errands. A platform slingback clog is the opposite: a thick sole that gives you height while staying stable on flat ground, closer to a flat in feel than to a heel.

Nerissa Slingback Sandal Heels
$84.99 open-toe sandal heel with an arched heel and an ankle strap, sizes EU 34 to 44.

Maren Platform Slingback Clogs
$88.99 round-toe platform clog with a thin back strap.
The wide toe and thick base make this the most walkable of the heeled options.
How do you stop slingbacks from slipping?
- Get the length right first. Too long and the foot slides forward, pulling the heel out from under the strap. Measure in centimeters; see how to measure your feet at home.
- Tighten or shorten the strap. Adjustable buckles are easiest. A cobbler can shorten a fixed or elastic strap.
- Add a thin grip pad under the ball of the foot. It stops the forward slide, which is the real cause of slipping in heels.
- Use a heel grip on the strap. A small silicone strip inside the strap adds friction.
- Choose a lower heel. If a mid heel keeps slipping, a kitten heel or flat in the same size often fits.
Our guide on how to style slingback heels covers sizing so the strap stays up, plus outfits by garment.
Sizing: slingback flats vs heels
Take the same size in both, measured by foot length. Do not size down in heels to stop slipping: it pushes your toes into the front. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller size in a flat with an adjustable strap and the larger in a closed-toe heel, then add a grip pad. Most of our slingbacks run EU 35 to 40; the Vera sandals go to 42, the Claudia heels to 43 and the Nerissa sandals to 44.
Care for patent, smooth and satin slingbacks
Wipe patent with a soft damp cloth and keep it away from heat, which can make it sticky. Smooth vegan leather can take a little mild soap. Satin should only be spot cleaned. Check the strap regularly: elastic loses stretch over time, and a cobbler can replace it. More in how to clean vegan leather shoes.
Chanel, Toteme and our slingbacks
Chanel's two-tone slingback is the original reference: beige and black, a short block heel and leather made to last, at over $1,000. Toteme's minimal slingbacks have a sharp, quiet line and are well made, at several hundred dollars. Both are leather. Ours are vegan and cost $58.00 to $88.99, in flats, kitten and mid heels, sandals and platform clogs, with split-toe versions neither brand makes. If you want the classic two-tone look specifically, read our Chanel slingback dupe guide.
Frequently asked questions
Are slingback flats or heels more comfortable?
Flats, for most people. The foot stays level, so the strap does less work and rubs less.
Do slingbacks slip off?
They can, mostly in higher heels or when the shoe is too long. An adjustable strap, the right length and a grip pad under the ball of the foot fix most cases.
Are slingback flats in style in 2026?
Yes. Pointed, square and split-toe slingback flats are all being worn, often with straight jeans and socks.
Can you wear slingbacks in winter?
Yes, with tights or socks. A closed-toe slingback flat or kitten heel works best in cold weather.
What heel height is best for slingbacks?
A kitten or low block heel. It looks polished but keeps the foot level enough for the strap to hold.
Should I size down in slingback heels?
No. Keep your length size and use a strap adjustment or grip pad instead.
