The proportion rule
A low heel shortens the leg slightly compared with a stiletto, so the outfit has to give the length back. Hem trousers at the ankle bone. End skirts mid-calf or at the knee, never mid-shin. Match the shoe to your tights or trouser color for a continuous line. Petite wearers: pointed or square toes lengthen; round toes and ankle straps shorten. Common kitten heel mistakes
- A mid-shin hem. It cuts the leg at its widest point and the low heel cannot rescue it. Go to the ankle or below the calf.
- A round toe with a round ankle strap on a petite frame. Two curves shorten the leg; choose a square or pointed toe instead.
- Treating it as a compromise heel. A kitten heel worn apologetically with a floor-length hem reads as a flat. Show it.
- Thick socks. They fill the low vamp and push the foot up. Sheer or nothing.
Color
Black does everything. Brown and plum are the 2026 alternatives to nude: they read as neutral and photograph richer. Metallics for evening only. Match tights to the shoe for the longest leg.
Sizing and comfort in a low heel
