A slingback heel has an open back and a strap around the heel, which makes it lighter than a pump, cooler in summer and easier to walk in, provided the strap sits snug across the top of the heel bone when you stand. Every slingback problem, slipping, rubbing, flapping, is a strap-position problem, and it is solved by sizing and by one trick at the end of this guide. The styling part is easier: a slingback goes with cropped trousers, midi skirts and shorts, in that order.

Style by garment
With jeans: cropped or cuffed, always
The strap has to show. Straight or wide-leg jeans cropped at the ankle bone, or cuffed once. A full-length hem over a slingback hides the one thing that makes it a slingback.

Yes, in two ways. A sheer black sock under a black slingback, strap over the sock, for the preppy version. Or a fine white ankle sock under a kitten slingback for the coquette version. Never a thick sock: the strap cannot sit on it. Tabi slingbacks take split-toe socks or sheer tights only.

Sizing so the strap stays up
Slingbacks fit differently from pumps. The strap should be snug across the top of your heel bone when you stand; sitting, it can feel loose and that is normal. If it slides down standing, the shoe is too long: go down a size, not up. If the strap is snug but the toe is tight, go up and add a heel grip. Ours run true to EU size; between sizes, take the smaller for flat slingbacks and the larger for heels. Claudia's heel runs to EU 43 and Nerissa to 44, unusual for the category.
The strap-slip fix
- Check size first (above). Most slipping is a shoe that is a size too long.
- Add a clear silicone heel grip inside the back of the strap, where it meets the heel counter.
- For elastic straps, a single stitch through the elastic at the back shortens it by half a centimeter without showing.
- Wear the strap slightly higher, on the heel bone rather than under it. A strap that sits too low has nothing to hold.
Care by material
- Patent-look vegan (Mirelle, Claudia): wipe with a damp microfibre cloth; a drop of glass cleaner restores shine.
- Smooth vegan (Daria, Vera, Nerissa, Margot): damp cloth; keep away from heat.
- Satin (Prima): brush dry; never wet; store stuffed.
- All: check the strap's elastic or buckle yearly; that is the part that ages first.
