What actually shows through
Everything. Toes, the top of the foot, a pedicure or the lack of one, and any sock. Black lace over a bare foot shows skin as a warm tone through the pattern; black mesh over a black sheer tight shows a uniform dark leg with the embroidery on top; white mesh over a bare foot shows the most. If you are not comfortable with your toes visible, a sheer black tight under black lace is the fix, and it looks intentional.

Socks or bare?
Bare, or the sheerest tights you own (8 to 15 denier). Any opaque sock hides the point of the shoe, with one exception: opaque tights in autumn, when you are deliberately turning a sheer flat into a patterned one. Mesh sneaker flats like Iris are different and take a ribbed sock.
Sizing and fit for mesh and lace flats
Mesh and lace stretch more than vegan leather, across the width, within a few wears. Buy true to size and, if between, size down. A strap style (Florence's bow tie) holds a foot that a plain mesh slip-on would let slide. Toe cleavage is normal in a low-vamp sheer flat and is part of the look; if you dislike it, choose the higher-vamp embroidered mesh. Florence runs EU 35 to 45, one of our widest ranges.
Care: keeping mesh and lace clean
- Snags: trim with nail scissors, never pull.
- Dirt: cold water, a drop of mild soap, a soft toothbrush, working from the inside out. Air dry stuffed with paper, away from heat.
- Rain: mesh dries fast and is fine; lace with sequins should be dried flat.
- Storage: in a bag, apart from anything with studs or buckles.
