Jika-tabi are Japanese work boots: a cotton canvas upper, a thin flexible rubber sole and a row of metal clasps up the back. "Tabi shoes" in fashion means a split-toe flat, heel, loafer or boot built like any other shoe, with a structured sole and a closure you can get on in seconds. Both borrow the divided toe from the traditional tabi sock, and that is where the resemblance ends.
Search for either term and you get two separate worlds. Workwear and martial-arts shops explain jika-tabi for builders and gardeners, with Japanese makers such as Marugo building them as practical work gear. Fashion sites talk about Maison Margiela, whose tabi boot has been a runway shape since the late 1980s and now costs well over $1,000, and Steve Madden, whose split-toe flats sell for around $100 to $130. Hardly anyone puts the three meanings side by side. This guide does, so you know which one you are looking for before you buy.

Isolde Tabi Ankle Boots
The fashion answer to a split-toe boot: a structured sole, a block heel and a side zip instead of clasps.
What does "jika-tabi" mean?
The name roughly means tabi that touch the ground. The original tabi was a sock, worn with thonged sandals such as geta and zori, which is why it needed a divided toe in the first place. Tabi socks go back many centuries in Japan. At some point people started stitching tougher soles onto them so they could be worn outside on their own, and in the early 1920s the Ishibashi brothers, who later founded Bridgestone, popularized a version with a molded rubber sole. That rubber-soled boot is the jika-tabi most people picture today.
Because the sole is thin and bendy, a jika-tabi lets you feel the surface under your foot and grip with your toes. That is useful on scaffolding or a roof, and it is the reason festival carriers, farmers and rickshaw pullers have worn them for generations. Modern work versions add steel toes or hook-and-loop closures, but the idea is the same.
What does "tabi shoes" mean in fashion?
When a fashion site says "tabi," it almost always means a shoe that copies the divided toe and nothing else. Maison Margiela showed a split-toe boot at its first show, and over the following decades the shape spread to ballet flats, mary janes, loafers, heels and sneakers. These shoes have a proper insole, a heel counter and a normal closure. They are designed to be worn with jeans or a skirt, not on a building site.
That is also why the fit feels different. A jika-tabi is closer to wearing a thick sock with a rubber base. A fashion tabi holds your foot in a shaped last, so the split sits between the big toe and second toe while the rest of the shoe behaves like a flat or a boot.

Amelora Black Leather Tabi Ballet Flats
The plainest fashion tabi: a smooth black vegan leather flat where the split toe is the only detail.

Echo Tabi Flats
Glossy vegan patent on a low hidden wedge, in black or wine red, for when the split should catch the light.
How are they built differently?
The sole
Jika-tabi soles are made to flex. That is great for balance and grip but gives almost no cushioning, so a full day on pavement can feel hard. Fashion tabi shoes use a firmer outsole with a padded insole, and the heel can be flat, stacked or raised into a block or stiletto.
The closure
The metal kohaze clasps on a jika-tabi hook into thread loops along the back of the shaft. Most work pairs have several, and doing them up takes a minute. Fashion tabi boots usually zip at the side, and flats rely on the cut of the shoe, a strap or laces.

Elodie Lace-Up Tabi Flats
Cord laces across the vamp: the fashion-shoe way to adjust the fit without a row of clasps.
The upper
Jika-tabi are usually cotton canvas in dark blue, black or khaki. Fashion tabi come in almost any finish. Ours are all animal-free: smooth vegan leather, vegan suede, satin and patent.

Sena Vegan Suede Tabi Ankle Boots
Brown vegan suede on a low block heel, for anyone who likes the soft look of a canvas jika-tabi but wants a city boot.
Which one should you buy?
- You work outdoors or on your feet on uneven ground: a real jika-tabi from a workwear maker. It is the right tool for the job.
- You practice a martial art that asks for them: check with your school first, since many prefer a particular height and clasp count.
- You want the split toe as part of an outfit: a fashion tabi. A flat or loafer if you are new to the shape, a boot if you mostly wear trousers.
- You love the traditional look and want to wear it in town: a low jika-tabi can work with wide cotton trousers, but expect people to read it as workwear. A soft vegan suede tabi boot gives a similar feel with a sturdier sole.

Daria Black Leather Tabi Boots
A black vegan leather tabi boot in EU 35 to 41, the city-boot counterpart to a mid-calf jika-tabi.
Sizing: how the two fit
| Jika-tabi | Fashion tabi shoes (ours) | |
|---|---|---|
| Size system | Centimeters of foot length, often in half steps | EU 35 to 40 on most styles, EU 41 on Daria |
| Intended fit | Snug, like a sock; the canvas gives with wear | True to size, with the split between big and second toe |
| Between sizes | Many wearers go for the closer fit | Size up in boots and patent; size down in soft slip-on flats |
| Long second toe | Go by the longest toe | Size up |
With any split-toe shoe, the divide should land exactly between your big toe and second toe. If it pushes into either toe, the size or the shape is wrong. Our tabi sizing guide walks through measuring at home.
What socks go with each?
Traditional jika-tabi are often worn over thin tabi socks, or barefoot in hot weather. Fashion tabi work with any split-toe sock: a no-show one when you want bare-looking ankles, a ribbed crew when the sock is part of the outfit. A regular sock bunches at the divide and rubs, so skip it.

Invisible Tabi No Show Socks
Split-toe no-show socks that disappear inside a flat or loafer.

Ribbed Crew Tabi Socks
A ribbed split-toe crew sock that shows above a loafer or boot.
Caring for each
- Canvas jika-tabi: brush off dried mud, hand wash in cool water with mild soap, and air dry out of direct sun.
- Vegan leather tabi: a damp cloth with a drop of mild soap, then dry away from heat. No machine washing.
- Vegan suede tabi: dry brush only, plus a water-repellent spray before the first wet day.
- All split-toe shoes: stuff tissue into both toe sections for storage so the divide keeps its shape.

Marugo, Maison Margiela, Steve Madden and us
Marugo and the other Japanese workwear makers build jika-tabi for real jobs. They are built for grip, ground feel and hard use rather than looks. If that is what you need, buy from them.
Maison Margiela turned the split toe into a fashion icon. Its boots and flats have beautiful leather and an exact heel shape, and they hold value on resale. Steve Madden brought the look to a mid price in leather, with a roomy US fit that suits a lot of feet.
We make fashion tabi only, all vegan, from $48 for a polka dot flat to $88.99 for boots, on a rounded toe box. We also make shapes you will not find in a work catalog, such as a studded tabi flat and a fold-over tabi boot.

Corinne Studded Tabi Flats
Rows of small studs on a black tabi flat: nothing a jika-tabi maker would ever build.
Frequently asked questions
Are jika-tabi and tabi shoes the same thing?
No. Jika-tabi are rubber-soled Japanese work boots with metal clasps. Fashion tabi shoes are flats, heels, loafers and boots that borrow only the split toe.
Can I wear jika-tabi as everyday shoes?
You can, and some people do, but the thin sole has little cushioning on pavement and the look reads as workwear. For long city days, a fashion tabi with a padded insole is easier.
Why do jika-tabi have a split toe?
They grew out of the tabi sock, which was split so it could be worn with thonged sandals. On a work boot, the divide also helps you grip with your big toe.
What are the metal clasps on jika-tabi called?
Kohaze. They hook into thread loops along the back of the shaft, and work boots usually have more of them than socks do.
Are fashion tabi shoes comfortable?
Most people need a few days to get used to the split, then find them as comfortable as any flat or boot. Our guide to whether tabi shoes are comfortable covers what helps.
Are your tabi shoes vegan?
Yes. Every pair we sell is made from vegan leather, vegan suede, satin or patent, with no leather, suede or other animal materials.
