If you are searching for a Doc Martens dupe, the useful answer is a style family rather than one shoe: a slim lace-up for the 1460 look, a block-heel Chelsea, a lugged-sole buckle boot and a square-toe ankle boot, all vegan and priced from $72.99 to $108.99. Our boots are sold under the Lil Cacti label. They echo the mood and some of the shapes, but not the sole, branding or construction.
The leather women's Dr. Martens boots we checked cost about $170 to $230 (USD) in retailer listings in October 2026: the 1460 at $179.95 at Zappos, the 2976 Chelsea at $169.95, and the Jadon platform at $210 at Nordstrom. Most of the range is animal leather, with a separate vegan line. Most search results are flat lists of six to twenty-one boots with almost no sizing help. This guide is sorted by Dr. Martens shape, covers sizing and break-in, and says plainly where Docs are the better boot.

Doc Martens 1460 alternatives: vegan combat and lace-up boots
The 1460 is the boot most people mean by Docs: eight eyelets, a smooth upper and a thick sole. We do not make a thick-soled eight-eye boot, so here is what we make instead. Ottilie has combat lacing from just behind the toe to above the ankle, but on a thin flat sole, so its proportions are boxing boot rather than army surplus.

Ottilie Lace Up Combat Boots
Combat lacing on a thin flat sole, with a pebbled toe cap and a plum lining. The priciest boot here at $108.99.
Verity keeps the lace-up and changes the toe and heel: a square toe, wrap-around cord laces and a slim column heel. It is the dressier, sharper-toed take on a lace-up. For outfits, see how to style combat boots.

Verity Lace-Up Square Toe Boots
Square toe, cord laces and a back zip on a slim round column heel. $92.99.
Chelsea boots like the Doc Martens 2976
The 2976 is the Dr. Martens Chelsea, listed at $169.95 at Zappos in October 2026. Odessa is our elastic-sided version, and Fenn suits anyone who dislikes zips and gores. Both have square toes, a different line from a round-toe Chelsea. Torn between a split toe and a Chelsea? See tabi boots vs Chelsea boots.

Odessa Square Toe Chelsea Boots
High-shine black with elastic sides and a strap across the vamp, on a stacked block heel. $84.99.

Fenn Square Toe Sock Boots
No zip, no back seam: a close sock shaft that pulls on and holds the ankle. $88.99.
Platform, chunky-sole and buckle boots: the Jadon and rider look
The Jadon is the Dr. Martens platform boot, listed at $210 at Nordstrom in October 2026 with a leather upper. We do not make a platform lace-up like it. What we make instead are boots with visual weight: a lugged sole, a wide heel or a pair of buckles. None of the Dr. Martens listings we read was a double-buckle rider boot, so this is the part of our range with no direct Doc comparison in what we read.

Wilder Buckle Rider Boots
Double silver buckles and a chunky lugged sole on a low block heel. $82.99.

Larkin Knee High Riding Boots
Knee-high, with buckles at the top and ankle on a lugged block sole. $86.99.

Rhea Chunky Heel Ankle Boots
A wide block heel and side zip: the chunky look at our lowest boot price, $72.99.
Western and square-toe ankle boots: beyond the Doc shapes
For a sharper toe, these two go in a different direction, and neither tries to look like a Doc.

Cassidy Pointed Toe Western Boots
A pointed toe, V-cut topline and chunky stacked heel, with a creased finish that looks worn in. $82.99.

Sabra Square Toe Ankle Boots
A blunt square toe on a slim tapered heel, with nothing extra on it. $92.99.
Dr. Martens dupes and alternatives: an honest brand comparison
| Brand | Styles checked | Price in USD, October 2026 | Material | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dr. Martens | 1460, 2976, Jadon, Sinclair, Audrick | About $170 to $230 | Leather | Whole sizes only. |
| Dr. Martens vegan line | 1460 Vegan, Sinclair, Jadon II Mono | About $170 to $210 list | Synthetic, animal-free | Several of the same shapes; list prices, sales run lower. |
| Steve Madden | Yukon, Riggs | About $130 and $199 | Leather uppers, synthetic soles | Vegan and leather versions both exist; check the colorway. |
| Sam Edelman | Laguna Chelsea | About $170 | Leather upper, synthetic sole | Wide width available. |
| Vagabond | Cosmo 2.0, Kenova | About $200 to $210 | Leather | Its US boot list showed only leather and suede. |
| Lil Cacti | Lace-up, Chelsea, rider, western | $72.99 to $108.99 | Vegan leather | Fashion-led designs. Free shipping on US orders over $90. |
Prices are retailer listings and move with sales. Choose Dr. Martens for leather, a signature sole and a name with history, if $170 to $230 is comfortable. Choose Steve Madden for a leather lug-sole boot at roughly $130 to $199, reading the material line for each colorway. Choose Sam Edelman for a leather lug-sole Chelsea at about $170, or Vagabond for a leather Chelsea at about $200 to $210. Choose us for vegan boots in fashion-led shapes at $72.99 to $108.99. We would rather say that plainly than pretend the others do not exist.
Where Dr. Martens still wins
There are four places. The first is the sole: Dr. Martens builds its classic lines around a signature sole, and we make no claim to match it. Retailers describe many classic Docs as Goodyear welted while independent shops disagree, so see the resoling answer in the FAQ. The second is break-in: leather boots are often described as stiff at first and then shaping to the foot, and some owners see that as the point. The third is heritage, which a newer label cannot claim. The fourth is a vegan line from the same maker.
Where we are ahead is narrower: price, a slimmer profile in shapes such as the thin-soled lace-up and the sock boot, and vegan leather throughout.
Are Doc Martens vegan?
Mostly no: the classic lines are animal leather. Dr. Martens does sell a vegan line in synthetic, animal-free materials. At Zappos in October 2026 the 1460 Vegan listed at $170, the Vegan Sinclair platform at about $189 and the Jadon II Mono Vegan at $210, though sale prices on the 1460 Vegan ran lower. A 2022 workwear review found the vegan 1460 thinner and softer than the leather one, with far less break-in. For a vegan shopper the comparison is a vegan Doc at roughly $170 to $210 list price against a boot from us at $72.99 to $108.99, before any sales. For the wider debate, see vegan leather vs real leather shoes.
Sizing and break-in: do Doc Martens run big?
Dr. Martens sells whole sizes only, so if you are between sizes you have to choose a direction. Advice conflicts: one shop blog says go down a full size, others a half size, and Nordstrom shoppers call the Jadon and the Audrick slightly large. Read reviews for the exact model. Footshop's women's chart pairs EU 36 with US 5 and UK 3, and EU 40 with US 8.5 and UK 6.5.
Ours are in EU sizes. Measure your foot in centimeters in the socks you will wear and match the chart on the product page rather than converting from a Doc size. Between sizes, check the size notes and reviews on the product page.
| Style | EU sizes | Shaft and opening |
|---|---|---|
| Ottilie lace-up | 35 to 39 | Laces up to a short shaft above the ankle |
| Verity lace-up | 35 to 39 | Ankle height, back zip |
| Odessa Chelsea | 35 to 40 | Short shaft, elastic sides |
| Fenn sock boot | 35 to 40 | Pull-on, no zip |
| Wilder rider | 35 to 40 | Mid-calf or short tube, rear pull tab |
| Rhea chunky heel | 34 to 40 | Ankle height, side zip |
| Larkin knee-high | 35 to 40 | Just under the knee, buckle at top and ankle |
| Cassidy western | 34 to 40 | Side zip, rear pull tab |
| Sabra square toe | 34 to 39 | Just above the ankle bone |
Leather boots are often described as stiff at first. We have no wear-test data on our boots, so we will not promise a break-in time. With any new boot, wear it at home for an hour or two over a few days, in your usual socks, before a full day out.
Caring for vegan boots
Wipe vegan leather with a soft damp cloth, dry it away from heat, and skip wax, oil and conditioners made for animal leather. Our guide to cleaning vegan leather shoes has the steps.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a Doc Martens dupe?
Not an exact one. No boot of ours shares a Dr. Martens sole, branding or construction. What you can buy are boots in the same style families: Ottilie for the lace-up, Odessa for the Chelsea and Wilder for a chunky buckle boot, all vegan, $72.99 to $108.99.
What is the best Dr. Martens alternative under $100?
It depends on the shape: Verity at $92.99 for a lace-up, Odessa at $84.99 for a Chelsea, Wilder at $82.99 for a chunky buckle boot, Rhea at $72.99 for the lowest price. Eight of the nine boots here are under $100; only Ottilie, at $108.99, is above it.
Do Doc Martens run big?
Reports differ by style. Nordstrom shoppers call the Jadon and the Audrick slightly large, and advice on going down a half or a full size conflicts, so read reviews for the exact model. Ours are in EU sizes; see the table above.
Can Doc Martens be resoled?
It depends on the line. Retailers describe the classic lines as Goodyear welted, while independent shops say they are heat-sealed and hard to resole, with the Made in England line as the exception. Resoling the vegan boots was unclear in what we read. We make no resoling claim for ours.
Which Doc Martens alternative should I buy first?
A black lace-up or Chelsea, because they go with the most. Ottilie suits dresses and skirts, Odessa suits trousers and denim, and Wilder is for anyone who wants the chunky sole and buckles.
