Alaia's core flat is the fishnet ballet flat: a 90% polyamide and 10% calfskin upper, a lamb leather lining, a rubber sole and a buckle strap, made in Italy. A vegan alternative has to borrow the idea rather than the material, which is a sheer upper over a clean, low shape. Alaia's rhinestone versions run about $1,450 to $1,490 (US dollars, October 2026); our nearest is beading and sequins.
Lace Embroidered Mesh Ballet Flats
The romantic version of the mesh flat: sheer mesh, floral embroidery and pearl-like beading, in white or black. $58.99.
Florence black Lace Ballet Flats
Sheer black floral lace on fine mesh with micro sequins, a nude-tone lining that shows through and a slim bow-tied strap. $54.99.

Studded flats: Alaia studs and the Valentino Rockstud idea
Alaia's studded flat is a stud-embellished patent leather ballet flat, listed at Moda Operandi for about $1,290 in October 2026. Valentino's Rockstud is a well-known studded flat, listed at about $950 in patent leather with platinum-finish studs. Its pointed toe is a different silhouette from Alaia's rounded buckle-strap flat, so we sort ours by toe shape and claim a match to neither.

Eyelet and studded tabi flats: the nearest to the Vienne look
Alaia's laser-cut look is the Vienne ballet flat in lambskin, about $1,250 in October 2026, with a perforated pattern. We do not make perforated vegan leather and would rather say so than imply it. The nearest detail we have is the eyelet, and a split toe adds the sculptural shape. Both of these are tabi flats.

Alaia does not make a true lace-up flat that we could confirm. Its closest match is the Criss Cross ballet flat, which uses a crossed buckle strap instead of laces: about $1,190 in crocodile-embossed calfskin and $1,350 in haircalf in October 2026. If you want Italian-made leather, a leather lining and the name itself, Alaia is the original and nothing under $100 replaces it. For a synthetic buckle-strap mesh flat at mid-price, look at Mango; Sam Edelman fills the $90 to $140 band. For vegan mesh, studs, eyelets or a lace-up wrap under $70, that is where we fit.
Alaia flats sizing and how ours fit
Alaia sizing is unresolved. The brand's own product page advises a half size down, while a Nordstrom listing for the same fishnet flat says it runs small and suggests a half size up. If you own a pair, check Alaia's size guide before using your Alaia size to pick ours.

Are Alaia flats real leather, and are they worth it?
Partly, and not vegan. Alaia's own product page (October 2026) lists the fishnet flat's upper as 90% polyamide and 10% calfskin, with a 100% lamb leather lining and a rubber sole. Even the mesh version has animal leather where it touches your foot. If you avoid leather, the original is off the table.
Is it worth the money? For a pair you will wear twice a week for years, Italian making and a leather lining are a fair case. For a trend you want for a season, a $46.99 to $68.99 vegan flat is a reasonable trade.
