The sock rule
Every loafer outfit below has a sock, and the sock is chosen by the loafer. Under a platform loafer, a sheer mesh sock: the sole is already heavy, so the sock should weigh nothing. Under a flat loafer, a ribbed crew showing two to four centimeters above the topline. Under a split toe loafer, a split-toe sock, because a regular sock bunches in the toe. For the days the outfit does not want a sock at all, a no-show liner that stops the rubbing and disappears.

Denim by fit
- Straight-leg, dark wash, cropped at the ankle bone: the consensus base for every loafer. Cuff once if the hem is long.
- Wide-leg, hemmed to graze the top of the shoe: works with the platform (the sole shows) and with the tabi (the toe shows when you walk). Never puddling over the loafer.

How loafers should fit
A loafer has no laces to adjust, so length is everything. Your heel should not lift when you walk, and the vamp should sit snug across the instep on day one; it will relax by the third wear. If you are between sizes, go down: a loafer that is too long slips at the heel and pushes the foot forward. Platform loafers fit like flats despite the sole.
