How to Style Leg Warmers in 2026: With Heels, Flats, Mary Janes, Boots and Every Outfit

Bettina Knitted Leg Warmers worn, by Lil Cacti

Leg warmers work in 2026 when they are scrunched at the ankle over a shoe that shows the foot, and when nothing else in the outfit is knitted. That is the whole technique: pull them over the heel of the foot so the bottom edge sits on the shoe, push them down into two or three folds, and finish with a flat, a mary jane, a heel or a boot that keeps the ankle line visible. Worn smooth and pulled to the knee they read as 1983; scrunched over a ballet flat they read as now.

The revival came from the studio, not the gym. Miu Miu sent leg warmers over ballet flats and heels down the runway, Sandy Liang made them a downtown uniform with bows and mary janes, and Repetto, the actual dancewear house, has sold knitted warmers to ballerinas for seventy years. We make one pair, gray and ribbed with a drawstring tie, and every shoe they get styled with. Below: leg warmers shoe by shoe, including the heels nobody else photographs, then garment by garment, how to choose and how to wash them.

The scrunch technique

  1. Put the shoe on first, then the leg warmer, so you can see where the bottom edge lands.
  2. Pull the warmer over the heel of the foot so the lower edge sits on the shoe's topline, not above it.
  3. Push it down into two or three soft folds. Ribbed knits stack; smooth knits slide, which is why ours is ribbed the whole way.
  4. Tie the drawstring at the top if the warmer has one, so the folds stay where you put them.
  5. Keep the rest of the outfit unknitted: a shirt, a slip, a tailored short, a sweatshirt at most.

Leg warmers shoe by shoe

With ballet flats

The origin pairing. A strap or lace-up flat is best because the strap gives the warmer something to sit above. Bare knee, mini or shorts, nothing else soft.

With mary janes

Mary janes and leg warmers is the Sandy Liang outfit. The strap shows below the warmer, the buckle catches light, and the whole thing reads as a ballet class you dressed up for.

With heels

Leg warmers and heels is the search everyone types and almost nobody answers. The rule: a low, chunky heel, never a stiletto, and the warmer scrunched low so the heel's shape is visible. A block heel, a mary jane pump and a satin ribbon heel all work; the warmer makes the heel look casual instead of dressed.

With boots

Two ways. Over an ankle boot, the warmer starts where the shaft ends, so the boot looks taller. Over a knee high boot, fold the warmer down over the top of the shaft so a few centimeters show, like a boot topper. Both keep the knee warm without tights.

With loafers

The preppy version. A flat loafer or a platform loafer with the warmer scrunched over a sheer sock. Keep the trouser cropped or swap it for a mini.

With sneakers

The "walking to class" outfit. A ballet sneaker or a lace-up sneaker flat, leggings, the warmer over the leggings, a big sweatshirt. This is the one all-soft outfit allowed, and only in one color.

Leg warmers garment by garment

  • With a mini skirt or shorts: the best pairing, because the knee shows and the warmer has a clear start and finish.
  • With leggings: warmer over the legging, both in one color, shoe in another. The one all-soft look.
  • With jeans: over a slim or straight jean only, scrunched at the ankle so the denim hem is inside the warmer. Never over a wide leg.
  • With tights: sheer or opaque tights under the warmer turn a mini into a winter outfit. Match the tights to the shoe.
  • With a dress: above-the-knee dresses only. A midi hem meeting a leg warmer is two soft edges in one place.

How to choose leg warmers

  • Length: mid-calf to knee is the wearable range. Over-the-knee warmers are for dancers and for photos.
  • Knit: ribbed stacks and stays; smooth slides down. Ours is ribbed the whole way with a drawstring at the top.
  • Fiber: wool and cashmere are warmest and most expensive; acrylic and cotton blends hold a rib better and wash more easily. Bettina is an acrylic knit.
  • Size: one size covers most calves; measure the widest part of the calf if yours is over 42 cm, and choose a longer warmer so the fold does not sit too high.
  • Color: gray, black, cream and oatmeal. Gray over black shoes is the safest, because it separates the warmer from the shoe without being a contrast color.

Care

  • Hand wash cold or a wool cycle in a mesh bag; lay flat to dry so the rib does not stretch.
  • De-pill with a fabric comb every few wears; ribbed acrylic pills at the fold line first.
  • Store rolled, not folded, so the rib keeps its bounce.

Miu Miu, Sandy Liang, Repetto and us

Miu Miu's knitted leg warmers, at about $450, put the accessory back on a runway over ballet flats and heels. Sandy Liang's bow-trimmed pairs, at about $150, are the downtown version. Repetto sells the real studio warmers to dancers at about $60. Ours is $19.99, ribbed with a drawstring, and photographed over every shoe type above. The scrunch technique is the same at every price.

Frequently asked questions

Are leg warmers in style in 2026?

Yes, as a balletcore accessory: scrunched at the ankle over flats, mary janes, low heels and boots, with a bare knee or tights above.

How do you wear leg warmers with heels?

Choose a low block or mary jane heel, never a stiletto, and scrunch the warmer low so the heel's shape shows. Bare leg or sheer tights underneath.

Do leg warmers go over or under jeans?

Over, and only over slim or straight jeans, scrunched so the hem sits inside the warmer. Under wide-leg trousers they add bulk nobody sees.

What shoes go with leg warmers?

Ballet flats, mary janes, tabi flats, low heels, ankle and knee high boots, loafers and ballet sneakers. Anything that shows the ankle line below the fold.

Can you wear leg warmers to the office?

Over opaque tights with a wool mini and a flat mary jane, yes, in creative offices. In conservative ones, wear them for the commute and take them off.

How do you keep leg warmers from falling down?

Buy a ribbed knit, scrunch it into folds rather than wearing it smooth, and tie the drawstring at the top. A smooth knit pulled straight will always slide.
