Tabi shoes are made on a split-toe last, a foot-shaped form with a groove between the big toe and the other toes. The upper is cut so it wraps into that groove, stitched along the cleft, pulled tight over the last, then attached to a sole and heel. Everything else is ordinary shoemaking. The cleft is the hard part.
Search for this and you mostly find Japanese sock makers showing how cotton tabi socks are sewn, workwear shops explaining rubber-soled jika-tabi, and Maison Margiela's own product pages. None of them explains how a fashion tabi flat, boot, heel or loafer is put together, or why one pair costs about $995 and another under $90. This guide covers that, step by step.
Traditional, work and fashion tabi: what is the difference?
Three very different objects share the name, and they are made in different ways.
| Traditional tabi | Jika-tabi (work tabi) | Fashion tabi | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A split-toe sock worn with sandals | A split-toe work boot | A split-toe shoe, flat, boot, heel or loafer |
| Upper | Cut and sewn cloth, usually cotton | Heavy fabric | Leather, vegan leather, satin, vegan suede |
| Sole | Fabric | Rubber, glued and heat-cured | Rubber, synthetic or stacked, glued or stitched |
| Fastening | Small metal hooks called kohaze | Kohaze along the side or back | Slip-on, strap, buckle, zip or laces |
| Made on a last? | No, sewn flat | Shaped over a form | Yes, a split-toe shoe last |
| Best known for | Kimono dress | Construction and farm work | Maison Margiela, from 1988 |
The split-toe sock goes back many centuries in Japan. Rubber-soled jika-tabi arrived in the 1920s; their invention is usually credited to the Ishibashi brothers, who later founded Bridgestone. Martin Margiela turned the shape into a fashion boot in 1988. For the longer story, read why tabi shoes have a split toe and jika tabi vs tabi shoes.
Step 1: why does a tabi need its own last?
A last is the solid form a shoe is built around. It decides the length, width, toe shape and heel height before any material is cut. A normal last has one rounded toe. A tabi last has a deep groove between the first and second toes, plus two separate toe shapes either side of it.
That is why a brand cannot simply add a split to an existing shoe. Every tabi shape (flat, heeled, boot) needs its own last, and every size needs a version of it. It is also why tabi tend to come in fewer sizes and one width: each extra size or width means a new last.

On a boot, the last also sets how the shaft rises from the ankle and where the heel sits.
Step 2: how is the upper cut and stitched at the split?
The upper is cut from flat pattern pieces. On a tabi, the vamp is usually cut so the material can be folded down into the cleft, and the two toe sections are joined with a seam that runs from the tip of the split back up the vamp. Some pairs show it as a visible center seam. On others it is tucked inside so the cleft looks smooth.
This seam is the stress point of the shoe. Every step bends the foot right at the split, so good pairs reinforce it with a backing piece behind the seam and tight, even stitching.

Center seam runs up the vamp, with contrast topstitching that shows how the panels join.
The white stitching makes the construction visible, which is part of the appeal.
Step 3: lining, stiffeners and the insole
Before lasting, the upper gets a lining, a toe stiffener (sometimes called a toe puff) and a heel counter at the back. In a tabi, the toe stiffener has to follow both toe shapes, which takes more care than a single rounded toe. The heel counter keeps the back from collapsing and helps stop heel slip.
Linings vary with the season and the shoe: smooth synthetic linings in flats, fabric in heels, and warmer linings in winter pairs.

Step 4: lasting, or pulling the upper into the split
Lasting means stretching the finished upper over the last and fixing it under the insole. On a tabi, the material has to be pushed down into the groove and held there until it sets. If it is pulled too lightly, the split looks soft and the toe sections gape. If it is pulled too hard, the seam strains. This step decides whether a tabi looks sharp or vague.

Step 5: sole and heel
The outsole is then glued (cemented) or stitched on. Fashion tabi usually use a thin flat sole for ballet flats, a stacked or block heel for pumps and loafers, and a heavier rubber sole for boots. The sole has to follow the split at the front too, so some brands cut a small notch in it and others keep the sole whole and let the upper make the split.

A round block heel is the classic tabi heel shape. It spreads weight better than a stiletto.

Wrapping the wedge in the upper material keeps the shoe looking like one continuous piece.
What are tabi shoes made of?
The upper material changes how a tabi fits, wears and ages. Here is how the common options compare.
| Upper material | How it fits at first | Over time | Care |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calf leather | Firm, needs breaking in | Softens and molds to the foot | Cream and polish |
| Smooth vegan leather | Soft, little break-in | Relaxes slightly, keeps its shape | Damp cloth, mild soap |
| Vegan patent | Firm, almost no stretch | Keeps its shape and shine | Wipe, avoid heat |
| Satin | Soft and light | Shows wear and water marks | Spot clean only |
| Vegan suede | Soft, warm | Nap flattens with wear | Brush, protector spray |

How does construction affect fit?
Because the split is fixed by the last, the second toe has to sit in the right place. If your toes are longer or shorter than average, the split can rub. That is why tabi sizing is usually done by foot length in centimeters, and why half sizes matter. Our guide do tabi shoes run small explains how to measure. Most of our tabi come in EU 35 to 40, with the Daria boots going to 41 and the Claudia slingback heels to 43. New pairs also need a few short wears; see how to break in tabi shoes.
How to care for the seam and the split
Dirt collects in the cleft, so clean it with a soft toothbrush rather than a cloth. Stuff the toe with tissue when the shoes are drying so the split keeps its shape. Avoid putting tabi near a radiator, which can stiffen vegan leather and weaken glue lines. For care by material, see how to clean tabi shoes.
Why do Maison Margiela tabi cost so much more?
Maison Margiela created the fashion tabi and still sets the standard: calf leather, carefully balanced lasts and a refined finish, at about $995 for a flat as of October 2026. Part of that price is the materials and finishing, and part is the name. Steve Madden's Calico line, at about $119 to $170, showed the shape can be made at a mass-market price, mostly in leather. Our tabi cost $48.99 to $88.99. We use vegan uppers and put the split on loafers, mules and slingbacks as well as flats and boots. Frequently asked questions
How are tabi shoes made?
On a split-toe last. The upper is cut and stitched along the toe cleft, lined and stiffened, pulled over the last into the split, then glued or stitched to a sole and heel.
What are tabi shoes made of?
Traditional tabi are cotton. Work tabi have fabric uppers and rubber soles. Fashion tabi use leather, vegan leather, patent, satin or vegan suede on rubber or stacked soles.
Why are tabi shoes hard to make?
Every shape and size needs its own split-toe last, and the upper has to be pulled cleanly into the groove without straining the seam.
Are tabi shoes handmade?
Most fashion shoes, tabi included, combine machine cutting and stitching with hand work at the lasting and finishing stages.
Who invented tabi shoes?
Split-toe socks are centuries old in Japan. Rubber-soled work tabi date from the 1920s. Martin Margiela created the fashion tabi boot in 1988.
Why do tabi shoes come in so few sizes?
Each size needs its own split-toe last, so adding sizes and widths costs more than it does for ordinary shoes.
