The Row's ballet flats look the way they do because of three things: a plain black upper, almost no sole, and nothing on the shoe that catches the eye. Copy those three and you have the look. The logo, the price and the Italian lambskin are the parts you are paying for, and you can choose to leave them out.
For reference, as listed on therow.com and Nordstrom on September 21, 2026: the Elastic Ballet Slipper is $820 in sheepskin nappa, the Stella Slipper $920 in nappa and up to $3,200 embroidered, the Ava Mary Jane flat $820, and the mesh Sock Shoe $690. Every product page we checked lists Italy, and none of those styles are vegan. Khaite's Jane flat is around $1,140 and Toteme's jersey ballerina around $580, which puts the whole "quiet luxury flat" category between $580 and $1,100. The alternatives articles currently ranking jump straight to $49 dupes and don't compare sole, fit or material. This one does.

What makes a flat look like The Row
- Black, matte or softly polished. Never high gloss, never color-blocked.
- No hardware, or one strap. The Elastic has a single elastic band; the Ava a mary jane strap. That's it.
- A low, clean topline. It shows the top of the foot rather than covering it.
- Practically no sole. The slipper sits flat to the ground. That is where the look comes from, and it is also the main complaint: reviewers say you can feel the pavement.
- Worn with quiet clothes. Long wool coat, wide trousers, a white shirt. The shoe is part of an outfit, never the point.
7 vegan alternatives, by which The Row style they echo
1. For the Elastic Ballet Slipper: Vivra
Smooth black upper, a fine strap across the instep, round toe and nothing else. It is the closest thing we make to the Elastic in spirit. The difference is a slim but real sole, so a city day is comfortable.

Vivra Strap Leather Ballet Flats
Smooth black vegan leather and a single fine strap: the quiet flat, with a sole you can walk on.

Vivra Strap Leather Ballet Flats
Under a wide trouser, the strap is the only thing that shows.
2. For the Ava Mary Jane: Clara
If you want the Ava's mary jane strap, Clara is round-toed in smooth black with a small bow. Its two buckle straps give it a slightly harder edge than the original. Worn under a long skirt, the straps are just visible.

Clara Buckle Strap Ballet Flat
Rounded ballet toe, small bow, dual buckle straps: the mary jane version, in smooth vegan leather.
3. For the Sock Shoe: the embroidered mesh flat
The Row's Sock Shoe is sheer nylon mesh on a leather sole. Ours keeps the sheer mesh and adds floral embroidery. It is prettier and less austere, but it gives the same see-through effect. In black, it's the closest match.

Lace Embroidered Mesh Ballet Flats
Sheer mesh ground with floral embroidery, EU 35–42: the see-through flat in black or white.
4. For the minimal slipper, split-toe version: Evelyne
For those who want the quiet flat with one unusual detail. Evelyne is black satin with a soft sheen, a gathered vamp and a drawstring bow, plus a split toe. It keeps the minimal feel while giving the flat something The Row's version doesn't have.

Evelyne Black Satin Tabi Ballet Flats
Black satin, gathered vamp, drawstring bow and a split toe: minimal, with one twist.
5. For the square-toe flats: Adora
If you like a squarer front, Adora has the square toe and a keyhole vamp with a cord tie. Its silver studs make it louder than the quiet-luxury originals, so wear it where you want one piece of edge in an otherwise quiet outfit.

Adora Square Toe Studded Ballet Flats
Square toe, keyhole vamp and a cord tie: the shape is quiet even when the studs are not.
6. For warm color: Cerise
Brown is the fall color of the quiet-flat look. Cerise is crinkled brown vegan patent on a small kitten heel, with a hidden elastic at the topline, so it hugs the foot like the Elastic slipper does.

Cerise Patent Ballerina Pumps
Crinkled brown vegan patent with a hidden elastic topline and a slim kitten heel.
7. For the Elastic, with more coverage: Suki
If The Row's low topline feels exposed, Suki has an unbroken topline that covers the instep and a burnished black finish. Its scattered studs sit only at the front.

Suki Studded Ballet Flats
Round toe, full topline, burnished black: more coverage than a slipper, the studs kept up front.
Sole, fit and sizing
- The sole question. The Row's slipper sole is famously thin. If you have ever found designer slippers hard on long walks, a flat with a slim but real sole is the practical upgrade.
- The Row runs small. Nordstrom's note on the Elastic says to order half a size up. Our flats are true to size: buy your usual EU length and don't size up.
- Half sizes. The Row offers half sizes on some styles; we sell whole EU sizes, mostly 35–40 (the mesh flat to 42). If you are between sizes, go down in a strapped style and up in a slip-on.
- Measure in centimeters. Match heel-to-longest-toe to the cm chart on the product page. It is more reliable than converting between EU and US. There is more on width in ballet flats for wide feet.
Care, so black stays black
- Smooth vegan leather: a damp cloth with a drop of mild soap, then a dry cloth. No leather conditioner or oil, because oil breaks down the coating on an artificial upper.
- Patent: a soft cloth, then buff. Store separately so the gloss does not pick up color from other shoes.
- Satin: dab, don't rub, with a barely damp cloth; store in a dust bag.
- Mesh: a soft brush, air dry, no machine.
The Row, Khaite, Toteme and us
The Row makes beautiful shoes. The Italian nappa is genuinely soft, the proportions are hard to fault, and the restraint is the whole point of the brand. Khaite plays in the same quiet register at a higher price. Toteme's jersey ballerina, at around $580, is the most comfortable of the three and the closest to a sock. If you want the real material and the label, any of them is a good buy.
Our flats are not those shoes, and we don't pretend otherwise. They take the same principles (black, minimal, low to the ground) and make them vegan, with a walkable sole, at $58.99 to $68.99. If you want the look without animal leather or the price, start with Vivra.
