Tabi Boots Dupe: Vegan Split-Toe Boot Alternatives Under $90, by Style

Daria Black Leather Tabi Boots by Lil Cacti — vegan boot, side profile

The best tabi boots dupe depends on the boot shape you want: Isolde for an ankle boot, Thea for a fold-over, Sena for brown vegan suede and Daria for the full boot, all vegan and all under $90. They are lookalikes in the same style family, not the original: our own designs, built on the traditional split-toe tabi shape that Margiela brought to the boot.

Margiela introduced the Tabi in its first collection in 1989, taking the shape from a traditional Japanese split-toe sock, and its core Tabi boots now list at about $1,490 to $1,750 in calf or lamb leather (checked October 2026). Many "tabi boot dupe" and "Margiela boots dupe" roundups sort by marketplace (Amazon, Etsy, AliExpress) or mix flats in with boots, and few say what a boot is made of or how it fits. This guide is boots only, sorted by shape, with materials, sizing, socks and winter notes. For flats, mary janes and heels, see our guide to vegan Margiela tabi alternatives under $100.

Ankle tabi boots: the closest Maison Margiela tabi boots dupe

The ankle boot is the shape most people mean by a tabi boot. Margiela lists its Tabi ankle boot with an 80 mm cylindrical heel and a lambskin upper at about $1,490 (checked October 2026). Isolde is in the same style family: a split toe, an ankle-height shaft, a cylindrical block heel its page describes as low enough to walk on all day, and a side zip, in vegan leather at $82.99.

Isolde Tabi Ankle Boots by Lil Cacti — vegan tabi boots, angled three-quarter view

Isolde Tabi Ankle Boots
The classic proportions: ankle shaft, cylindrical block heel and a structured split toe, with a side zip.

Steve Madden's Caro is the mainstream comparison: a 3-inch block heel, a side zip and a 5.75-inch shaft in leather, about $170 list (checked October 2026). It suits you if you want leather. It is not vegan, and it comes in medium width only.

Fold-over and slouch tabi boots

Thea has a wide black shaft to mid-calf that stands up or folds down, a buckle strap at the ankle and a stacked block heel, at $88.99. Taller options exist: Steve Madden's Calora is a leather knee-high tabi boot at about $200 (checked October 2026), and Jeffrey Campbell makes a flat slouch tabi boot, the Herring, that we could not verify on price or materials. We do not make a knee-high tabi, so Thea's mid-calf is our limit.

Vegan suede tabi ankle boots

Margiela also sells its Tabi ankle boot in suede, at about $1,650 (checked October 2026). Sena is the brown vegan suede take on that idea: a matte finish, a short shaft that stops just above the ankle bone and a round column heel of mid height, at $82.99.

Structured full tabi boots

Margiela's Tabi Boot at Nordstrom has a 6-inch shaft and lists at about $1,490 to $1,550, depending on version (checked October 2026). Daria is our full-boot answer: a black vegan leather upper in a clean structured cut, fully lined, with the divided toe, at $88.99. It also has the widest size run of the four, up to EU 41.

Chelsea-style tabi boots: what we make and what we do not

Margiela's Tabi Chelsea adds elastic sides, a 40 mm heel and a chunky lug sole, at about $1,750 (checked October 2026). We do not make a split-toe Chelsea, and we would rather say so than sell you something else under that name. Odessa is our Chelsea-style boot: elastic sides, a strap across the vamp, a stacked block heel and a square toe with no split, at $84.99. Our guide to tabi boots vs Chelsea boots covers how the two shapes compare.

Tabi boot alternatives compared: Maison Margiela, Steve Madden, WoodChuck Sato and us

Brand Tabi boot styles Price (checked October 2026) Material Notes
Maison Margiela Ankle boot, Chelsea, Tabi Boot, suede, knee-high About $1,490 to $1,750 for core boots Leather, calf or lamb depending on style The original, made in Italy. Fit advice conflicts.
Steve Madden Caro (block-heel ankle), Calora (knee-high) About $170 and $200 Leather upper, not vegan Medium width only.
WoodChuck Sato Vegan slouchy mid-calf and tall buckle boots; leather ankle, Chelsea, knee-high About $200 to $280 for vegan styles (listings vary); over $350 for leather ankle and knee-high Vegan styles: microfiber PU upper. Others: leather. Independent Singapore-based maker; a reviewer found sizing ran large.
Lil Cacti Isolde, Daria, Thea, Sena (plus the square-toe Odessa) $82.99 to $88.99 Vegan Our own designs. Free shipping from $90.

Where the others do better: Margiela is the original, made in Italy in calf or lamb leather, and nothing under $90 matches that heritage or construction. Among brands like Maison Margiela for tabi boots, Steve Madden offers a leather tabi boot at a fraction of the price. WoodChuck Sato is the only other brand we found selling vegan-material tabi boots, and it makes shapes we do not, including tall, buckled and leather styles.

Jeffrey Campbell and Free People come up in many roundups. In October 2026 we found one Jeffrey Campbell tabi boot, a flat slouch style, but could not verify its price or materials, and we could not find a split-toe boot from Free People, so neither is in the table.

What you give up under $90: animal leather (the point if you buy vegan), the original's label and Italian construction, and tall tabi boots. What you keep is the split toe in four boot shapes at prices that make trying one easy.

Do tabi boots run small? Margiela tabi sizing vs ours

Published advice on Margiela's tabi boots conflicts: some retailer guides say true to size with half a size up for wide feet, one says the ankle boot runs about half a size big and narrow, and some buyers find the knee-high snug in the calf. Do not convert from a Margiela size; measure your foot in centimeters.

Our four tabi boots fit true to EU size with the sock you will wear; if you are between sizes, go up. Do not size up just to give the split more room, because a boot that is too big lets the foot slide into the divider. The full chart is in our tabi sizing guide.

Boot EU sizes Toe If between sizes
Isolde 35 to 40 Split Size up
Thea 35 to 40 Split Size up
Sena 35 to 40 Split Size up
Daria 35 to 41 Split Size up
Odessa 35 to 40 Square, no split Check the size selector

Socks that work with tabi boots

Wear a split-toe sock in a split-toe boot so it sits in the divider instead of bunching at the split. Margiela sells tabi socks at about $78 to $192 on Farfetch (checked October 2026); the three below run $14.99 to $16.99. More in our guide to what socks to wear with tabi shoes.

Winter, rain and care notes for vegan tabi boots

We do not describe any of these boots as waterproof, and Margiela's own care guidance is also to keep its boots away from water and heat. Treat a tabi boot as a cold, dry day shoe, and fit it with the sock you plan to wear. For standing water or slush, wear a boot made for it. See our guides to wearing tabi shoes in winter and protecting vegan leather shoes from water. For everyday care, wipe vegan boots with a soft damp cloth and dry them away from heat, as in our guide to cleaning vegan leather shoes.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Maison Margiela dupe?

There are lookalikes in the same style family: split-toe boots at lower prices. None matches the original's Italian leather construction. Ours are our own vegan designs at $82.99 to $88.99.

What is the best Maison Margiela alternative under $100?

It depends on the shape: Isolde ($82.99) for an ankle boot, Thea ($88.99) for a fold-over, Sena ($82.99) for brown vegan suede, Daria ($88.99) for a structured full boot. All four are vegan split toe boots under $100, and in fact under $90.

Are Margiela tabi boots real leather?

Yes. Official pages list a calf leather upper on the Chelsea and a lambskin upper on the ankle boot. A vegan Tabi sock boot was sold in the past, but we could not find it on sale in October 2026.

Does Steve Madden make tabi boots?

Yes: the Caro, a block-heel ankle boot at about $170, and the Calora, a knee-high at about $200 (checked October 2026). Both have leather uppers, so neither is vegan. For vegan options, compare WoodChuck Sato from about $200 or our boots under $90.

Do tabi boots run small?

Ours fit true to EU size with the sock you will wear; go up if you are between sizes. Margiela advice conflicts, so measure in centimeters. See the tabi sizing guide.

Are tabi boots comfortable?

Most people need a short adjustment to the divider between the big toe and the rest. A split-toe sock helps, and so does the right size: a boot that is too big lets the foot slide into the split. Our break-in guide covers the first week.
