A tabi mary jane is the easiest split-toe shoe to wear, because the strap makes it read as a mary jane first and a tabi second. People who find a plain tabi flat "too much" almost always get on with the mary jane version. It is also the tabi style that works with socks and tights best, since the strap sits on top of them and frames them.
Below are 12 outfit recipes built around our own tabi mary janes, photographed on foot, plus the sock rule and a comparison with the tabi ballet flat so you can decide which to buy first. Maison Margiela makes the designer original at about $1,000; Miu Miu's buckled mary janes started the current mary jane revival; Steve Madden's mary janes are the mall version. Ours are the vegan split-toe version, under $80.
The three tabi mary jane shapes we make
| Style | Strap | Upper | Best with | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lena | Single slim strap, low on the instep | Smooth black vegan | Sheer tights, fine socks, bare | $64.99 |
| Tabi Mary Jane | Single buckle strap | Crinkled black vegan | Contrast socks, denim | $78.99 |
| Double Strap Tabi Mary Jane | Two straps across the instep | Smooth black | Mini skirts, tailored shorts, tights | $68.99 |
Before the outfits: the sock rule
Three options, in order of ease. Sheer tights (any color, 8 to 20 denier) stretch into the split and show through it; this is the current fashion pairing. Split-toe socks in white or gray give the contrast-sock look and sit neatly under the strap. Bare feet for summer and evenings. What does not work is a regular cotton sock, which bunches in the toe. Full detail in our tabi sock guide.

Ribbed Crew Tabi Socks
White or gray split-toe sock under a black strap is the fashion-week pairing.
12 tabi mary jane outfits
1. Lena + baby-blue sheer tights + black wool mini
The look that put tabi mary janes on every mood board. Color through the split, strap over the tights, a mini short enough to see it all. Oversized knit on top.

Lena Tabi Mary Jane Ballet Flats
Slim strap over sheer tights: the color shows through the split toe.

Baby Blue Sheer Tights
The tights that made this outfit. Gray and plum work the same way.
2. Tabi Mary Jane + cropped straight jeans + white sock + gray sweatshirt
Weekend. The buckle strap and the white split-toe sock give denim a reason to be cropped. Keep the sweatshirt big and the jeans straight, not skinny.

Tabi Mary Jane
Buckle strap, crinkled upper. Made for a white sock and cropped denim.
3. Lena + black opaque tights + pleated midi + trench
Office, autumn. Black-on-black at the foot, so the split is the only detail. The pleats move against the trench; the shoe stays quiet.
4. Double Strap + tailored black shorts + long-line waistcoat
Summer office or a gallery opening. Two straps across a bare instep read as intentional against the sharp line of tailored shorts.

Double Strap Tabi Mary Jane
Two straps, bare foot, tailored shorts. The most architectural tabi mary jane outfit.
5. Lena + gray argyle sheer tights + camel skirt + cream knit
Pattern under the strap, solid everywhere else. Argyle reads as preppy from a distance and as a tabi up close.

Rowan Argyle Sheer Tights
Fine argyle under a single-strap tabi: one pattern, everything else plain.
6. Tabi Mary Jane + black slip dress + leather-look jacket
Evening. The crinkled upper picks up light; the slip dress is matte. Bare foot or a black sheer tight.
7. Lena + wide-leg cream trousers, hemmed to the ankle + black tee
The hem is the whole trick: it must clear the strap. Cream trousers make the black shoe look graphic.

Lena Tabi Mary Jane Ballet Flats
Hem at the ankle bone, so strap and split both show when you walk.
8. Double Strap + white socks + plaid mini + cardigan
The schoolgirl reference, done on purpose. The split toe is what stops it from being a costume; it adds one strange element to a familiar formula.
9. Lena + black cigarette trousers + oversized blazer
Work, winter. This is the tabi mary jane outfit for offices with a dress code: from across the room it is a black flat and a suit.

Lena Tabi Mary Jane Ballet Flats
Under a cigarette trouser the strap is visible and the split is a detail.
10. Lena + sheer black socks + denim midi skirt + striped tee
Spring weekend. A sheer black sock (not opaque) under a black strap softens the edge of the shoe against pale denim.
11. Double Strap + satin midi slip + fine knit
Dinner. Two matte straps against satin. Keep jewelry to one piece.
12. Lena + everything above, swapped for a tabi ballet flat
Every outfit here also works with our strapless Amelora flat. The difference is security and how the shoe reads with socks, which brings us to the comparison.
Tabi mary jane vs tabi ballet flat vs tabi loafer
| Tabi mary jane | Tabi ballet flat | Tabi loafer | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How "tabi" it reads | Least: strap first, split second | Most: the split is the whole shoe | Medium: monk strap distracts |
| Heel slip | None (strap) | Some if oversized | None |
| Socks and tights | Best of the three | Tonal socks only | Sock band between hem and shoe |
| Dress codes | Office to evening | Casual to smart-casual | Office |
| Buy first if | You are unsure about tabis | You already love them | You wear trousers daily |

Amelora Black Leather Tabi Ballet Flats
The strapless alternative: same toe, more "tabi", slightly less secure.
How ours compare with Margiela, Miu Miu and Steve Madden
Maison Margiela's Tabi mary jane is calf leather, about $1,000, with the house's narrow toe box. Miu Miu's buckled mary janes have no split toe but set the proportions everyone is copying: low vamp, wide strap, round toe. Steve Madden makes both conventional mary janes and, some seasons, a tabi flat. Ours combine the Miu Miu strap proportion with the Margiela toe at $65 to $79, in vegan materials, and they run true to EU size. If you know your Margiela size, order your usual EU size from us instead.
Frequently asked questions
Are tabi mary janes easier to wear than tabi flats?
Yes. The strap makes the shoe read as a mary jane first, it stops heel slip, and it frames socks and tights. Most first-time tabi buyers should start here.
What socks do you wear with tabi mary janes?
Sheer tights in any color, split-toe socks in white or gray for contrast, or bare feet. Avoid regular cotton socks, which bunch in the split.
Can you wear tabi mary janes to work?
Yes. With black tights and a midi skirt or with cigarette trousers and a blazer, a black tabi mary jane reads as a black flat from across the room.
Do tabi mary janes run small?
Ours run true to EU size. Size for the toe; the strap manages the heel. See our sizing guide for the cm chart.
Should the strap be tight?
Snug, not tight. You should fit one finger under it. If the strap is tight on the last hole, the width is the problem, so go up a size.
