A mary jane is a low shoe with a strap across the instep; a ballet flat has no strap. A mary jane flat is the mix of both: a ballet-flat shape with that strap added. If flats slip off your heels, buy a mary jane first. If you want the cleanest line with trousers, buy a ballet flat.
The two shapes come from different places. The ballet flat grew out of the dancer's slipper, and Repetto, the Paris maker founded in 1947, still sells its classic Cendrillon flat from about $300. The mary jane took its name from a character in an early 1900s comic strip, and today the style runs from Miu Miu's patent pairs at over $1,000 to knit versions from Rothy's at roughly $150. Most comparisons stop at "one has a strap." This guide covers what the strap changes, with a side-by-side table, fit advice for each, and outfits for work and weekends.

Iselle Lace-Up Mary Jane Ballet Flats
A ruched vegan leather upper with a cord bow: the mary jane that still reads as a ballet flat.
Are mary janes ballet flats?
Some are. "Mary jane" describes the strap, not the height, so there are mary jane flats, mary jane pumps and chunky mary jane sneakers. A mary jane flat with a round toe and a thin sole is a ballet flat with a strap, which is why the two terms overlap so much in shops. A ballet flat without a strap is never a mary jane.
Which is more comfortable?
For most feet, the mary jane. Without a strap, a ballet flat stays on through a snug heel and the tension of the topline. When either loosens, your toes start gripping to hold the shoe, and that causes the aching arch many people blame on flats. The strap removes that work. Ballet flats can be just as comfortable if the fit is exact and you have a narrow heel. A lace-up or elastic topline also helps.

Demi buckle mary jane ballet flats
Two buckle straps with metal eyelets: the most secure fit on this list.

Romy Lace-Up Ballet Flats
A ballet flat that laces at the front, so you can tighten it the way a strap would.
Which is better for work?
Both work in an office. Ballet flats look the most polished with tailored trousers because nothing crosses the foot, and the line from hem to toe stays unbroken. Mary janes look better with skirts and dresses, and a pointed or square-toe version looks sharp rather than sweet. If your commute involves a lot of walking, a mary jane stays on better on stairs and escalators.

Buckled Mary Jane Flats
A pointed toe and an adjustable buckle strap, in black, wine red or leopard, EU 35 to 42.
Which goes better with jeans?
With skinny and slim jeans, the ballet flat, because the low vamp keeps the leg looking long. With straight and barrel jeans, the mary jane, because the strap gives the ankle some weight under a wider hem. Crop straight jeans just above the ankle so the strap shows.

Adora Square Toe Studded Ballet Flats
A square-toe ballet flat with silver dome studs and a keyhole tie: a flat that holds its own with denim.
Socks and tights
Mary janes are the easier shoe with socks: the strap and a visible cuff together make it look planned. White or gray crew socks with a black mary jane is the classic. With ballet flats, socks are harder. A sheer sock works, a thick one usually looks accidental. With tights, both look good in fall and winter; match the tights to the shoe for a longer leg. There is more in our guide to wearing ballet flats with socks.

Lace Embroidered Mesh Ballet Flats
Sheer mesh with floral embroidery and a strap, in black or white, EU 35 to 42.

Sizing
- Ballet flats: the heel should feel snug with no gap when you rise onto your toes. If you are between sizes, size down in a slip-on, because it will loosen.
- Mary janes: the strap makes up for a little extra length, so if you are between sizes, go up and use the buckle to fine-tune.
- Range: most of our flats run EU 35 to 40; the buckled mary jane and mesh flats go to 42, and Mara lace-ups run 36 to 43.
- Wide feet: an adjustable strap is kinder than a slip-on. See our guide to ballet flats for wide feet.
Care
- Smooth vegan leather: wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap; no conditioner needed.
- Straps and buckles: undo the buckle before you take the shoe off, so the strap does not stretch at the hole.
- Mesh and lace: spot clean only, with cool water, and let dry flat.
- Storage: stuff flats with tissue so the low topline does not collapse.
Repetto, Rothy's, Miu Miu and us
Repetto is the original ballet-flat maker, and its stitch-and-turn construction makes a flat that is very soft from the first wear. If you want the classic in leather, it is the one to buy. Rothy's knits its flats and mary janes from recycled plastic bottle yarn and makes them machine washable, which is useful for travel and commuting, at roughly $150. Miu Miu has defined the mary jane trend for several seasons, and its patent pairs set the look at over $1,000.
Ours cost $46.99 to $78.99, in vegan materials, with shapes the others do not make: studded flats, lace-up ballet flats and split-toe mary janes. If you care most about a machine-washable knit, Rothy's does that better. If you want the ballet-slipper softness of a Repetto, budget for it. If you want the silhouette and a vegan upper at a lower price, start here.

Lena Tabi Mary Jane Ballet Flats
A mary jane strap on a split-toe flat, for when you want both shapes at once.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between ballet flats and mary janes?
A mary jane has a strap across the instep; a ballet flat does not. A mary jane flat combines a ballet-flat shape with that strap.
Are mary janes more comfortable than ballet flats?
For most people, yes, because the strap holds the foot and your toes do not grip to keep the shoe on. A well-fitted ballet flat can be just as comfortable.
Can you wear mary janes with jeans?
Yes. Straight and barrel jeans cropped just above the ankle look best, so the strap shows.
Are mary janes still in style in 2026?
Yes. They are still one of the most worn flat shapes, now more often in square and pointed toes, with buckles, studs and split toes.
Can you wear socks with mary janes?
Yes, and it is one of the easiest ways to wear them. White or gray crew socks, lace socks and sheer socks all work.
Are ballet flats good for walking?
For moderate walking, if the heel fits snugly. For long days on foot, a strap or lace-up flat stays on better.
